Poems on Lasting, Real Love
These are the words I come back to — not the ones about falling in love, but the ones about staying. I keep a shelf full of them. Here are a few I return to most.

This is the one I hand couples who’ve lost themselves trying to become one person instead of two whole ones standing together.
Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made: Our times are in His hand Who saith “A whole I planned, Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!”
I love that this isn’t a young man’s poem. It’s written by someone who understood that love gets better with age, not smaller.
Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Love never faileth.
I’ve read this at more weddings than I can count. It reads differently once you’ve lived through the “beareth all things” part.

Real love was never meant to be quiet or careful. This passage has always reminded me it’s allowed to be fierce.

I know this one myself. My husband is no longer here in physical form, and I still love him — fully, presently, not in the past tense. That’s what I mean when I say love for every season, even this one.
